MQ‑5 Liquefied Gas (Methane) Sensor Module – Environmental Sensors
The MQ‑5 is a compact, low‑cost gas‑detection board that senses methane, LPG, natural gas and other combustible vapors in the 200 ppm–10 % range. It integrates a tin‑oxide semiconductor sensing element, a built‑in heater circuit, and an analog output pin that delivers a voltage proportional to the gas concentration, ready to plug into any Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or micro‑controller kit. The module’s small size (≈ 34 × 24 mm) and on‑board voltage regulator make it ideal for classroom benches, portable field kits, and DIY environmental monitors.

With this sensor, students explore real‑world STEAM concepts: they learn the chemistry of oxidation reactions that change the sensor’s resistance, practice data acquisition and signal‑conditioning in code, and apply mathematics to calibrate and graph concentration curves. Hands‑on projects such as building a smart home leak detector, a classroom air‑quality monitor, or a fire‑prevention alarm, reinforce engineering design cycles, algorithmic thinking, and data‑driven decision making. Key features include a wide detection range (200 ppm–10 % CH₄), fast response/recovery times (< 10 s), adjustable sensitivity via a potentiometer, and a simple 5 V power requirement. Its robustness and clear documentation make the MQ‑5 an excellent gateway for students to connect chemistry, physics, coding, and environmental stewardship in a single, engaging learning experience.
