KY-040 Rotary Encoder Module – Motion & Position Sensor
The KY-040 is a compact, 3‑pin incremental rotary encoder that converts the angular position and speed of a shaft into clean digital pulses. When the knob is turned, the module outputs two quadrature signals (A and B) that indicate direction and step count, plus a push‑button switch for user‑initiated actions. It plugs directly into a breadboard and connects to any microcontroller (Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, etc.), making it an ideal bridge between mechanical motion and electronic code.

What students will learn
Working with the KY‑040 introduces learners to real‑world concepts such as debouncing, state machines, and closed‑loop control. By programming the encoder, students explore how to read precise position data, implement speed‑controlled motors, build interactive menus, and create DIY joysticks or volume knobs. The hands‑on experience reinforces mathematics (binary counting, angular calculations), physics (torque, angular velocity), and computer science (interrupt handling, event‑driven programming).

Key features

  • 20 steps per detent, 24 pulses per revolution (high resolution)
  • Built‑in push‑button for extra input / menu selection
  • Simple 5‑pin header (VCC, GND, SW, DT, CLK) for quick prototyping
  • Wide operating voltage: 3.3 V – 5 V, compatible with most hobby boards
  • Robust plastic housing with a smooth, tactile knob for reliable, repeatable turns

Why it shines in STEAM education
The KY‑040 turns abstract concepts of motion and data into tangible, interactive projects, perfect for STEAM classrooms where curiosity drives learning. Its low cost and plug‑and‑play design let students iterate rapidly, from simple counter displays to sophisticated robotics steering systems. By linking mechanical rotation to digital logic, the encoder encourages interdisciplinary thinking, fostering creativity in engineering, coding, mathematics, and design—all while keeping the learning curve approachable for beginners and challenging enough for advanced makers.
